Background of the study
Effective waste management is crucial for maintaining public health and environmental sustainability, particularly in densely populated urban centers like Benin City. In recent years, rapid urbanization and population growth have intensified the challenges of solid waste disposal, recycling, and environmental conservation. The implementation of various waste management strategies, including community clean-up initiatives, recycling programs, and the development of modern waste disposal facilities, aims to mitigate the adverse effects of unmanaged waste (Eghosa, 2023). Despite these efforts, persistent challenges such as inadequate funding, poor public awareness, and inefficient policy enforcement continue to hinder the overall effectiveness of waste management in the region. Studies have indicated that a multifaceted approach, combining government intervention with community participation, is essential to address these challenges (Obaseki, 2024). Furthermore, environmental degradation caused by improper waste disposal adversely affects public health, contributing to the spread of diseases and deteriorating quality of life (Igbinovia, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of current waste management strategies in Benin City, with an emphasis on identifying gaps and proposing sustainable solutions to enhance urban environmental management.
Statement of the problem
Benin City faces significant challenges in managing waste effectively due to rapid urbanization and inadequate infrastructure. Despite the implementation of various waste management strategies, including recycling initiatives and waste collection systems, inefficiencies persist, leading to environmental pollution and public health concerns (Eghosa, 2023). The lack of coordinated efforts among governmental agencies, waste management companies, and community members has resulted in poor waste disposal practices. Insufficient funding and a lack of public education further exacerbate the problem, hindering the success of waste management policies (Obaseki, 2024). These challenges have led to the accumulation of solid waste in public areas, contributing to the spread of diseases and reducing the overall quality of life. Without effective interventions, the environmental and health impacts of poor waste management are likely to worsen, placing additional strain on municipal resources. This study seeks to assess the current waste management strategies in Benin City, identifying the key factors that undermine their effectiveness and proposing recommendations to create a more sustainable urban environment (Igbinovia, 2025).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the effectiveness of current waste management strategies in Benin City.
To identify key challenges that hinder efficient waste management.
To recommend sustainable interventions to improve waste management practices.
Research questions
How effective are current waste management strategies in Benin City?
What are the main challenges facing waste management in the area?
What sustainable interventions can enhance waste management practices?
Research Hypotheses
H1: Current waste management strategies in Benin City are not sufficiently effective.
H2: Inadequate funding and public awareness significantly hinder waste management efficiency.
H3: Sustainable, community-based interventions can improve overall waste management outcomes.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth evaluation of waste management strategies in Benin City, highlighting challenges and proposing sustainable solutions. The findings will inform policymakers, environmental agencies, and community stakeholders on best practices to improve urban sanitation and public health (Eghosa, 2023; Obaseki, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to assessing the effectiveness of waste management strategies in Benin City Local Government Area. It does not extend to other urban issues or regions.
